 OCD & BELIEF

Whilst OCD may be maintained by an overactive loop of activity in the brain, belief clearly plays a role in shutting the loop off.  Normal sensory triggers that let the brain know we are clean for example, sometimes fail to register.  Looking at or physically touching our clean hands will often fail to convince the brain of the cleanliness, and the loop will continue until the hands ‘feel right’ on an emotional level, or they have been cleaned a certain number of times or in a certain way.  If the overactive brain loop stops and provides relief in connection to a number or the completion of a ritualistic pattern then, it is not the cleanliness that dissipates the heightened brain response loop but the BELIEF ‘I am now clean’.  The field of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) offers a number of techniques to assist with shifting beliefs so that the belief ‘I am clean’ can be activated more quickly and earlier in the OCD loop.  More logical sensory checking systems can also be activated with NLP so that rather than trying to feel emotionally that a body part is clean, the eyes or touch can be used.  Both of these techniques can deactivate the brain activity loop.
